[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Shahrazad Al-Rahman | The Benevolent
FANDOM: Trinity Blood | Manga
CHRONOLOGY: After her death in Volume 12, Chapter 45: "Great Expectations"
CLASS: Hero
SUPERHERO NAME: The Benevolent
ALTER EGO: Shahrazad Al-Rahman; former Sub-Commander of the Empire's Police force and Countess of Babylon. I guess that makes unemployed at this point.
BACKGROUND:
World: Shahrazad comes from a post Apocalyptic world that is essentially what ours would be like if we traveled to Mars due to overpopulation, found a spaceship with nanomachines inside, and decided to inject ourselves with it. It goes without saying this did not end well. A war was fought over the spaceship found on Mars which lead to the destruction of the majority of Earth. When the population on Mars returned to help what was left of the world recover they were met with fear and resentment. The injections they had taken had given them super human strength, endurance, enhanced senses, and an extended lifespan. Unfortunately they also gained weaknesses upon their return: allergies to the sun, silver, and a need to consume blood in order to maintain the nanomachines in their bodies dubbed Bacillus.
One of these people who returned from Mars (called a “Returner” at that time) was killed by a regular native of Earth (known as a “Terran”). Whether this was by accident or on purpose is something never fully clarified because it did not matter. It started a war between the two groups. The Returners led by three Nightlord siblings (who also led them while on Mars) decided to kill all the Terrans. They got dangerously close until a woman known as the Holy Madonna intervened. She gathered all the Terrans (and some Returners who were against the slaughter) under the Vatican's banner and began to fight back. They saved mankind and drove the Returners to the East.
In modern times of the Trinity Blood world, this division still remains more or less. Both groups are rebuilding the world and remain in a constant state of cold war with each other.
History: At a young age, Shahrazad's parents died leaving her in the care of her uncle Suleyman, the Duke of Tigris. They are both descendants of Returners who are now known as Methuselah or Vampire living in the east now known Tzara Methuselah or the Empire. Her uncle's job was to help defend foreign cities which often times did not have any Methuselah in them. As a result of this, Shahrazad became friends almost exclusively with Terrans and carried none of the hate and prejudice most Methuselah had. In her adult years, she was part of the military and eventually became Sub-Commander in Timisoara, an important city that bordered the line between Terrans and Methuselah.
Her uncle later on would be dissatisfied with the Empress and how she ran the Empire. He led a rebellion that would ultimately fail, using Shahrazad as an unwitting accomplice all the while. Rather than face the consequences for uncle's actions, Shahrazad choses to flee the Empire. Her servants, which she views as her precious family, follow her rather than go to another master. Once they reach Istvan, they are all captured by the Archbishop of that city and Shahrazad is given an ultimatium: kill Saint Esther or lose her family.
Shahrazad cannot bring herself to murder the young woman. Instead she kidnaps her and explains the situation to the young saint. Esther teams up with her and the two spend the next two days trying to rescue her family from the Archbishop. They eventually find them only to discover they are too late. Shahrazad's family had been tortured to death. Distraught by the sight of her butchered family, Shahrazad loses control and murders several soldiers working for the Archbishop as Esther pleads with her to stop.
She is quickly taken down by a UV light and shot repeatedly by the remaining soldiers. The Archbishop had taken the Pope and his older sister hostage before Esther and Shahrazad arrived. He planned to frame Shahrazad for the deaths of both them and Esther in order to spark the final war between Terrans and Methuselah. Before he can have them finished off, allies of Esther, the Pope, and his sister arrive on the scene to rescue them.
Ultimately they defeat the Archbishop and his troops leaving Shahrazad dying in Esther's arms. Esther begs Shahrazad to run away with her but, she only responds by admitting her love for the other girl and walking away. She then takes the Pope hostage and tries to convince Esther to shoot her in order to clear the saint's name as a traitor for helping a vampire. Esther passionately refuses, saying she would rather be burned at the stake than hurt her. Shahrazad tearfully thanks Esther before pulling the trigger herself thus ending her own life.
She dies in Esther's arms moments later, telling her to become a saint who will make coexistence between the two races possible.
Relationships
Shahrazad and Suleyman
Shahrazad's beloved uncle. He became disillusioned at some point leading him to not only rebel against the Empire but, use Shahrazad to do it. It's shown in a brief flashback that they once shared a loving relationship and he was in every way her father. He was the one who taught her to love both Terrans and Methuselah because he (correctly) considered both groups human beings. Even following his betrayal and death which destroyed her life, Shahrazad only thinks of him as the man who raised her and taught her all about love and compassion for your fellow man.
Shahrazad and her servant family
Little is known about them. Their only speaking appearance was in a flashback where they stated their loyalty and love for Shahrazad as well as vowing to protect her. Even from this brief glimpse it's easy to see they were a real family. The older servants protected Shahrazad as if she were a daughter to them while the younger ones seemed to look up to her as an older sibling. Their deaths devastated Shahrazad causing her to slaughter the ones who tormented them in a blind rage, an extremely out of character act for the gentle girl.
Shahrazad and Esther
Her best friend for all of two days. The two girls worked together to save her family which unfortunately did not work out. During their adventure, Shahrazad credits Esther for reminding her of her uncle's lesson that everyone is human and to not blame an entire race for the wrong of one man. Later on she admits to Esther that she loves her before killing herself in order to save her best friend. She gives her the rank of tovaras, a huge honor in her homeland during this time as well. Esther very much represents what Shahrazad perceives to be the good in mankind which is why she gave her the task of creating co-existence between the warring races.
Despite their short relationship, Esther means everything to her making her sacrifice even more fitting.
PERSONALITY:
Shahrazad is a gentle soul. She has no desire to hurt or belittle anyone. Instead she shows love and affection for anyone she meets. The Countess does her best to give everyone a fair chance regardless of their race or what others may say about them. This is a rare trait in any individual. Given that Shahrazad is actually from the Tzara Methuselah or the Empire it is practically a miracle. The Empire, in particular the Methuselah and their Empress, are blatantly racist. They believe themselves to be better than Terrans.
Thankfully Shahrazad had very little exposure to this way of thinking thanks to her uncle. He taught her that whether someone is a Methuselah or Terran, they are human. The young Shahrazad took his words to heart and lived by them. No matter where she went she made friends easily because she had no judgment unlike most of her kind. They were all human beings and deserved respect unless they did something to lose it.
This was a double edged sword however. Shahrazad trusts too easily. She is often naïve to the true intentions of others. This is not because she is unintelligent. Shahrazad simply focused in on that message of equality Suleyman gave her. She simply assumes everyone has the same sense of honor and benevolence she possesses until it is proven otherwise. By the time she discovers that not everyone is forthcoming and honest it is often too late. The most tragic example of this would be with her family. She genuinely believes the man holding them hostage, the Archbishop, would allow them to live. Later when she goes to rescue them with Esther, the protagonist of the story, she finds they were tortured to death. The man responsible even goes so far as to say that should not be surprising to her at all, pointing out that her belief that he would not lie to her about keeping them alive was naïve.
As gentle as she is even Shahrazad has a breaking point. If she sees that you have done terrible wrongs by others she will be sure to make you pay for it. Again the situation with her family is a good example. When she sees they have been tortured to death, Shahrazad slaughters the soldiers working for the man who kidnapped them. She would have killed the man himself were it not for the remaining soldiers and UV lights being used against her.
Lastly Shahrazad is loyal and selfless. After nearly being killed by the soldiers working for the Archbishop she realizes that everything she has done with Esther was in vain. Knowing she would die from her injuries and leave Esther to deal with the title of traitor, she decides to act once more to save her only surviving loved one. She takes the Pope hostage and threatens to kill him unless Esther comes to her. Once Esther does she tries to convince the nun to kill her in order to become a Lady-Saint who defeated the monster holding the Pope hostage. When Esther refuses, Shahrazad kills herself; making it appears as though Esther did it. In her parting words she shows that despite everything that happened she still believes in what her uncle told her in her youth. She pleads with Esther to become the Lady-Saint who will help everyone live together in peace and dies in Esther’s arms.

POWER:
Haste: The ability of Methuselah's to move at great speed. They are so quick, it almost makes it appear as if they disappear and reappear at will.
Regeneration: The ability to heal quickly. Some examples of this in canon: we've see they can regrow or reattach limbs as long as they were not cut by silver, normal cuts heal almost instantly, serious injuries will mend in days, etc.
Enhanced strength: Just as the label says. We see Shahrazad use this mosly to carry Esther around or knock out someone quickly. The exact extent of it to date has not been defined but, it isn't to an obscene level. Methuselah won't be lifting buildings anytime soon but, they can carry heavy weapons or people easily.
Enhanced senses: All five senses Methuselah have are amplified. They can "sense" when people are nearby, hear them from far away, etc. I am willing to sacrifice this ability in order to fit Shahrazad better into the game setting.
[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:
[You can hear a wistful sigh as a young woman as she addresses the device. You cannot see her face but, she sounds content.]
I should have questioned Esther about the heaven Terrans believe in. It would have been useful to know that it is so much like the western world before Armageddon.
Does this mean I am forgiven? I have no regrets about punishing the men who harmed my family but, making Esther cry... that was wrong of me. I should not have killed those men in front of her no matter how evil their actions were or pushed her into ending my life to save herself. She didn't want it even if it was for the best.
[She's quiet for a long moment, collecting herself, before asking softly.] My beloved family... can you hear my voice? You must be here too somewhere. I failed you in so many ways but, if you're willing to forgive me I'd like to explore this place with you. Perhaps here I can walk underneath the light of the sun again if God is truly as forgiving as Esther claims. it would be my greatest pleasure to walk in the sparkling light with you.
[Suddenly she laughs, taking on a lighter tone.] Ah! My manners! I am the Countess of Babylon, Shahrazad Al-Rahman. Almost ten days ago, I was the Alma Luxor of Timisoara, which is a way saying I was Sub-Commander of the Police. That doesn't matter now, does it? That life is now behind me. I doubt we have needs here but, should I be wrong please call on me for help. I will do my best to no longer fail those in need.
Thank you for listening to me. I promise I won't steal anymore of your precious time here.
LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
It took some time to absorb the fact that this was not the Heaven Esther believed in. It took even more time to make peace with the fact this was not even related to the world she was native to.
Shahrazad liked to think as of this moment she had a handle on the situation. Like the grim situations the Methuselah left behind, there seemed to be a tiny bit of hope to be found here. They expected former noblewoman to be a hero despite her great personal failures in shielding her loved ones from danger. While she was frightened of once again failing, the boyar in her was satisfied to be given the chance to reclaim her lost honor.
“The most noble blood shall run first.” This time that ideology the Archbishop attempted to twist in order to kill Esther would come to pass. At least that was what she used to comfort herself. The events of that week, those final two days with Esther, seemed like a lifetime ago. Yet the wounds were still deep. Esther's tears and her family's mutilated bodies haunted her even as she walked through this strange city that was long dead in her world.
At the same time, she felt a little closer to Esther. Roaming the city, waiting for an opportunity to protect the innocent, was similar to what Esther had done to earn herself the title of saint. If she recalled correctly from their conversations in the hotel, they even gave her a name, “Csillag”. Shahrazad smiled to herself. Csillag had been Hungarian for star. The Benevolent was English for Al-Rahman. She pressed a hand to her chest. Perhaps the God Esther believed in had forgiven her after all to allow them to share these parallels.
Perhaps they may even deem her worthy to become a brave, courageous saint too.
FINAL NOTES ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER:
Shahrazad always wears a pair of gloves that are powered by quartz. They release a powerful electric vibration. It can do something simple such as knock someone down or combined with her enhanced strength could create a small crater in the ground. I would very much like her to keep them since it is not only her trademark weapon but, the audience never sees her without them in the story.
